Harry Poter New

About Harry Poter

One of the great little trivia notes about the original Troll is that the main character is named Harry Potter Jr. He was named such before JK Rowling started writing her famous book series about a boy wizard, but I rather doubt she stole the character from John Carl Buechler’s wretched piece of shit film*.

But the people behind Troll do have a claim on the name Harry Potter. And we are in the middle of a remake craze. Can you see where this is going?

If you guessed a remake of Troll called The Troll: Rise of Harry Potter, you’d win. You’d possibly win a lawsuit from Rowling and/or Warner Bros, but you’d win.

Actually, the producers think they’re on pretty firm legal ground, and they even boast about how THEY could have sued Rowling:

“While some of the films’ themes might seem familiar, Troll’s owner decided not to sue J. K. Rowling or Warner Bros… because of a family tragedy at the time. They just put it on the back burner… and delayed matters until now.

“There is no problem with doing a remake of Troll because you can remake your own stuff. Everybody knows it was our material. We made the movie years before Rowling came out with her book.”

It’s important to note that Troll 2, the beloved best worst movie, actually has zilch to do with Troll. In Troll Harry Potter Jr’s sister is possessed by an evil wizard in the form of a troll. It’s really horrible - possibly even worse than Buechler’s horrible Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood.

* If we’re looking for actionable Harry Potter antecedents I would look at the Timothy Hunter character from Neil Gaiman’s Books of Magic comics - a bespectacled 12 year old English boy who discovers he’s a natural born magician and who has a pet owl. But realistically this character is simply a type, one who comes up again and again in literature.
